WATERVLIET — Peter R. Bendon, 84, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 9, 2022, with his beloved wife Ann at his side.

He was born in Troy on September 16, 1937, the son of the late Thomas G. and Grace White Bendon. He attended St. Patrick’s Grammar School in Troy and was a 1956 graduate of Catholic Central High School where he excelled at football and basketball. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1956-1958, and returned to serve in the U.S. Army during the Cuban Missile Crisis from 1961-1962.

Peter was employed shortly by the Ford Motor Company. He became a New York State correction­s officer serving at the Green Haven Correction­al Facility for over 31 years retiring as a sergeant in 1991. While living in Connecticu­t, he was employed by the MunsonLove­tere Funeral Home in Southbury, Conn.

Peter and Ann lived in Poughkeeps­ie for over 33 years before moving to Waterbury, Conn. for 13 years. They returned to the Capital District and lived in Speigletow­n and Shaker Point in Watervliet for the past four years.

Pete loved sports and was elected to the C.C.H.S. Hall of Fame in 2007. Above all, family was most important. He possessed a quick wit, was always kind, and loved a good time.

He was the loving husband of 63 years of Ann Marie Canfield Bendon; devoted father of two cherished daughters, Theresa (Cliff) Myers of Chester, Conn. and Lori Atkinson of Riverbank, Calif.; and the dear brother of Marcia McGraw of Delmar and the late Richard, Timothy, Theodore, Gerald and Matthew Theodore Bendon, Jeanne Liney and Patricia Wiley. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass on Friday, June 17, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 498 Watervliet Shaker Road, Latham with Reverend Geoffrey D. Burke, Pastor, officiatin­g. The burial will be private for his family in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Troy.
