Uploading photos to cloud good option

- HINTS FROM HELOISE — An old codger with too many photos — The Versteegs, via email — S.R., via email Write to P.O. Box 795000, San Antonio, TX 78279-5000.

DEAR HELOISE: In response to “A Reader from Kentucky” who uploaded all of their mother’s photos to their computer: I would suggest uploading them to a cloud drive (OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.). Computer drives will most likely fail at some time. Having them on a cloud drive makes it easy to transfer them to a different device.

Also, you can access them from your cellphone, tablet or any other device connected to the internet. You can also share them with family members. No thumb drive needed.

DEAR HELOISE: You can make a new dust cover for the back of a picture frame. First, remove hardware on a flat surface. Cut a piece of brown paper (maybe a grocery bag?) slightly larger than the frame. Put a bead of glue on the back of the frame.

Dampen the paper and shake off excess water. Place the paper on the frame and press down to spread the glue.

Then lay the frame face-down on a table or floor. Put a towel over the damp paper and something flat over the whole frame, with some added weight. The next morning, you’ll have tight paper backing on the frame. Cut off the excess paper just inside the wood with a razor or knife, and you’ll have done a professional-looking job. Put the hardware back on and hang it back on the wall.

DEAR HELOISE: Removing water spots can be tough. I think everybody’s water is hard, and I always use a rinse aid in my dishwasher. But I stumbled on a great hack for getting hard water off of crystal glasses: Spray them with WD -40. Let them sit, and you’ll see the film clear out. You may need to spray them a few times. Then, wash them in dishwashing detergent.
