Pats set to release backup Hoyer

BOSTON — The Patriots are expected to release veteran quarterbac­k Brian Hoyer, a source said.

Hoyer, who has had three stints with the Pats, started one game in 2022, suffering a concussion in Week 4 against the Packers. He was put on injured reserve and stayed there all season.

The 37-year-old had one year left on the two-year, $4 million deal he signed last March, which included $1.4 million in guaranteed money for 2023.

Victim sought help for son

QUETTA, Pakistan — A Pakistani national soccer team player who died in a migrant shipwreck off of Italy’s southern coast embarked on the voyage to find medical treatment for her disabled 3-year-old son. Hospitals had told her that help overseas could be her only option.

Shahida Raza, 29, who also played for Pakistan’s national field hockey team, was one of at least 67 people who perished. The overcrowde­d wooden boat they were traveling in broke apart in rough waters.
