RPI sweeps Canisius

Sutter Muzzatti and Austin Heidemann scored in the second period and Jack Watson only allowed one shot to get past him as RPI completed a sweep of Canisius with a 2-1 win Saturday in Buffalo.

Heidemann broke a tie game in the 11th minute of the second period to propel RPI to its fifth win of the season. It was Heidemann’s sixth goal of the season. Muzzatti, who had scored in the fifth minute of the period, assisted on the goal. It was Muzzatti’s fifth goal of the season, but first tally since Oct. 10 at Clarkson.

Erik Urbank beat Watson for a game-tying goal two minutes after Muzzatti scored, but he was otherwise unbeatable in making 27 saves to earn his third win of the season. Ethan Robertson made 29 saves for Canisius.

RPI has won three of its last four games heading into the meat of their conference schedule which begins Friday versus Yale at home.

Bentley 4, Union 3 (OT): Union rallied from a three-goal deficit, but Nik Kingkade-Armstrong saved the day for Bentley with an overtime goal to give the Falcons the win. Ethan Leyh scored three straight goals to stake Bentley to a 3-0 lead through two periods. Chaz Smedsrud, Josh Nixon and Ben Tupker scored in the third period to force overtime. Tupker’s goal tied the game in the 13th minute.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba — Former Wild forward Nino Niederreit­er scored two goals and the Winnipeg Jets beat the Minnesota Wild 4-2.

DENVER — Samuel Girard will return for the Avalanche after receiving care from the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program. Girard will play Sunday in his first game since Nov. 18. He entered the program Nov. 24, citing anxiety and depression leading to alcohol abuse.
