Area plans events to mark Earth Day

Several events are planned in the Capital Region and Hudson Valley to mark Earth Day. Here are some of them:

Albany

Events in the South End are Saturday, April 20. At least eight to 10 gardens tended by organizati­ons and individual volunteers across Albany’s South End will receive care in terms of weeding and trash removal, adding mulch and compost and planting seedlings beginning at 9 a.m. The Earth Day Celebratio­n Party that follows from noon to 4 p.m. will include food, entertainm­ent, educationa­l and tabling offerings, a raffle, and will be held in and around the Radix, located at 153 Grand Street.

Albany Bicycle Coalition will host its seventh Earth Day Bike Ride with the theme: Albany Complete Streets Projects What’s Been Done, What is Needed. Begins at 12:45 p.m. Saturday April 20 at Capital Hills Golf Course Parking Lot, 65 O’Neil Road, Albany. Ten-mile round trip; some gradual hills, mainly low-traffic streets and bike lanes. Riding time: 2 1/2 hours, including several stops for informativ­e talks. Optional refreshmen­t stop after ride at Martel’s at Capital Hills . (Rain date: April 27.) Helmets and signed waiver required. Minimum age 12; riders

under age 18 must be accompanie­d by adult.

Clifton Park

An Earth Day STEM Mystery Bag Challenge takes place at the Clifton Park Halfmoon Public Library on Moe Street, 4 p.m. Monday, April 22. Kids will receive a bag of mystery items (recyclable­s and other basic materials) to complete a design challenge. For grades 2-5. Registrati­on required. 518-371-8622. www.cphlibrary.org.

Copake

From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 20, volunteers will pick up litter along roads in Copake

hamlet, Copake Falls, Craryville and Copake Lake. Pick up along your nearby roads or meet at the Grange Hall, 628 Empire Road. Trash bags provided; bring your own gloves and sturdy shoes. Drop off collection­s by noon at the dumpster at Town Hall, 230 Mountain View Road, or to the Copake Park dumpster or the transfer station. Glens Falls

The annual Glens Falls Cleanup Day is 9 to 11 a.m.

Saturday, April 20. Tasks include sweeping, raking, trash pickup and general tidying of the sidewalks. Volunteers are asked to provide their own work gloves. Organizers will be providing rakes, shovels, garbage bags, rubber gloves, hand sanitizer, masks and free refreshmen­ts. The cleanup crew will meet at 9 a.m. behind Minky Mink in the Ridge Street parking lot adjacent to Glens Falls City Hall at 42 Ridge Street. No signup is required, but online RSVPs are appreciate­d to the “Glens Falls Downtown Cleanup Day” event on the Downtown Glens Falls Facebook page: www.facebook.com/downtowngl­ensfalls/events.

Halfmoon

The town of Halfmoon Canal Clean Sweep event, part of a series of cleanups and trail walks designed to bring the community together in celebratio­n of the shared environmen­t and public spaces, takes place from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 20 at Crescent Park, Terminal Road. Participan­ts will be provided gloves and trash bags at the bottom of Terminal Road.

Keene

The Ausable River Associatio­n hosts its annual Earth Day Ausable River cleanup from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 20, registrati­on at 9:30 a.m. Volunteers will assist AsRA

in removing garbage and debris from roadsides and riverbanks in the Lake Placid, Wilmington, Jay, Upper Jay, and Keene communitie­s. Lunch and raffle prizes will be available after the cleanup to celebrate coming together to care for the river. Volunteers will meet at the Community Center pavilion in Keene for registrati­on and lunch.

Troy
