Collins, Marie Ross

ALBANY — Marie Ross Collins, 87, entered eternal life Thursday, September 20, 2018.

Born in Whitehall, N.Y. on February 11, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Minnie Ross. She graduated from Whitehall High School, class of 1948 and the Mildred Elley School of Albany in 1949 with an honors degree. On September 5, 1953, she married Alfred J. Collins Jr. also a member of the Whitehall High School, class of 1948.

In July 1949, Mrs. Collins accepted a secretarial position with J.E. Sawyer & Company in Glens Falls. In 1954, she accepted a position with the Glens Falls Public School System, serving as secretary to the principal. In 1955, she returned to Whitehall and worked as a legal secretary with the firm of Layden & Layden, remaining until 1957. In May 1958, her husband accepted a position in Albany.

Subsequently during the next nine years, she taught Religion at St. Teresa of Avila School to the public school students. With her children in their teens at Christian Brothers Academy, she volunteered as a substitute teacher at C.B.A. Later, she accepted a position as bursar and then administrative assistant to the Principal for Admissions and Academic Affairs. After 22 years at C.B.A., she retired in 1992. Mrs. Collins was always an avid homemaker and gourmet cook.

Mrs. Collins is survived by her son Alfred Joseph III, his wife Ruth, and two grandchildren, Brendan Jason and Alfred James Collins of Albany. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years Alfred J. Collins Jr., B.S., R.ph.m, L.H.D., in 2011; and her son James in 1993. She also is survived by her sister-in-law Hazel Ross of Greenwich, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Marie’s family on Tuesday, September 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Mcveigh Funeral Home, 208 North Allen St., Albany. Funeral services on Wednesday, September 26, at 10 a.m. in the Parish of Mater Christi, Albany, where her funeral Mass will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Our Lady of Angels Cemetery, Whitehall, following the funeral Mass.
