Had a ‘heart of gold’

No arrests have been made in slaying of Brianna Haughton

- By Sara Cline

Troy homicide victim is remembered by family and friends.

Brianna Haughton was a graduate of Schodack schools. She was someone who enjoyed the outdoors. She was a friend of many. She was a basketball player. She was a daughter, granddaughter, sister and mother.

Now she is also the victim in Troy’s most recent homicide.

Haughton, 21, was found dead at a Pawling Avenue home around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Troy Police Chief Brian Owens told reporters Monday.

Police arrived at 491 Pawling Ave. after someone called to ask officers to check on the welfare of Haughton’s son. They found Haughton’s body at the home. Police found the infant safe in another location.

Owens called the incident an “extreme act of violence,” but as of Tuesday afternoon few details on the death had been released.

“At this point in the investigation,

we are not going to specify the nature or cause of the wounds or the manner of homicide,” Owens said Tuesday.

On Tuesday a police patrol and yellow crime scene tape remained at the home, which is a couple doors down from Sacred Heart School.

Owens said on Monday that police have identified a “person of interest” who was being treated at a local hospital with significant

wounds and who is in stable condition.

“It is fair to say that there is a connection, a relationship,” Owens said. “It does not appear to be a stranger at this point.” As of Tuesday afternoon, though, no arrests had been made in connection with the death.

In Haughton’s obituary, running in Wednesday’s Times Union, family members described her as a “beautiful, caring and loving young lady that had a heart of gold and was always there for anyone that needed her help.”

She enjoyed the outdoors, especially playing basketball, having campfires and splitting wood. Above all else she enjoyed spending time with her family — especially her son, Justice.

Friends and family are invited to calling hours from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rockefeller Funeral Home in Rensselaer. Haughton’s funeral will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the House of Praise in Castleton.

“We will always cherish her beautiful smile,” Haughton’s obituary stated. “Her amazing personality and all the precious memories she created.”
