Faison, Merritt help Horses fly

They combine for 37 of Troy’s 54 points in win against Averill Park

Latyce Faison scored 20 points and Nazaire Merritt scored all 17 of his points in the second half to spark Troy to a 54-44 victory over Averill Park on Tuesday in a boys’ basketball game in the Collar City.

Faison kept the Flying Horses afloat in the second quarter when he scored 11 of Troy’s 13 points in the period.

Zach Price led Averill Park with 18 points.

The Flying Horses (10-1, 9-0) lead the Suburban Council Gray Division while Averill Park (11-3, 7-3) dropped into a tie for second place with Columbia.

More boys’ basketball: J.J. Chestnut nailed five 3s and finished with 23 points and Khari Croley scored 20 points as first place Watervliet edged La Salle 69-60. The Canoneers lead the Colonial Council Patriot Division. ... Michael Alamo-benitez led Albany with 25 points in a 66-64 Suburban nailbiter against Ballston Spa. He hit three of the Falcons’ eight 3-pointers, which was enough to edge the Scotties, who were led by 29 points from Luke Alteri. He and Keegan Zoller (19 points) combined to go 26-for-27 from the free-throw line. The game was within one point through the end of the first three quarters.

Girls’ basketball: Albany remained undefeated with a 76-51 win over Ballston Spa. Ahniysha Jackson led the Falcons (13-0) with 27 points. Albany leads the Suburban Council Gray Division . ... Breanna Lott converted a traditiona­l 3-point play with 15 seconds left to propel Mohonasen to a 57-55 win over Ravena. Lott finished with 16 points. Grace Engel scored a gamehigh 19 points for Ravena.

Nordic skiing: Queensbury won the boys title and Mayfield captured the girls championsh­ip at the Guilderlan­d Invitation­al at Lapland Lake. Paul Lindsey of Lake George won the boys race in 23 minutes, 55.5 seconds, nine seconds ahead of second place finisher Erik Schreiner of Hadley-luzerne. Bailey Gengel of Queensbury won the girls race in 16:59.4. Katrin Schreiner of Hadley Luzerne finished second in 17:23.1.
