June Farms hosting jamboree, cake contest on Aug. 3

June Farms in West Sand Lake will host its first June Farms Jamboree, a day of food, drink, farm activities and animals, family fun and more on Saturday, Aug. 3. The first sessions runs 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the second from 5 to 9 p.m.

Among the activities will be a cake competition, with divisions for adult (16 and older) and junior bakers. There will be a $250 prize for each division’s winner.

Admission to the jamboree is $10 per person in advance (free for age 2 and younger; online ticketing fee extra), $20 at the door if not sold out. Find tickets and details about the cake contest by visiting facebook.com/junefarmsny.

Berben & Wolff’s set to open Troy location next month

Berben & Wolff’s, which has run a vegan deli on Lark Street in Albany for three years and sold seitan products wholesale for about five years, next month will open its second deli location, at the corner of Fourth and Ferry streets in downtown Troy.

The projected date is Tuesday, Aug. 13, according to a Berben & Wolff’s Facebook post.

Hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday., closed Monday. The opening notice says the Troy menu will be unveiled soon, suggesting it may be different than the one at the Albany original.

Berben & Wolff’s has used the Troy space since last summer as a commercial kitchen to produce its various seitan products for distribution to about two dozen restaurant accounts. The location previously was home to a late-night eatery called Brown Bag, which closed three years ago.

Berben & Wolff’s co-owner Joey Berben told me earlier this year that the plan is to expand into another room behind the Brown Bag footprint and run the deli and production kitchen out of the combined spaces. Further plans are to buy another building for commercial production, sites for which are being scouted, and expand the Troy spot into a full-service bar and restaurant. That could be a year or more down the road, Berben said, depending on progress on the building search.
