Movie QUIZ

- ▶

On July 21, 1865, Wild Bill Hickok shot and killed Davis Tutt in a gunfight in the town square of Springfield, Mo., in what is regarded as not necessarily the first Old West quickdraw duel in a public space but one of the earliest that can be credibly documented.

These one-on-one pistol duels were actually rare; it took the movies, and the Western genre in particular, to popularize the dusty and dramatic faceoffs, as well as multishooter ones.

Now, 155 years later, we have many big-screen examples to draw on, both real and fictional. Test your knowledge of the best cinematic shootouts with our latest quiz.

■ 1. Howard Keel played a cleanedup Wild Bill Hickok, the alleged love interest of Doris Day’s title character, in the 1953 musical “Calamity Jane.” But he also played another real-life sharpshooter, Frank Butler, in what 1950 musical, whose success led to the creation of the later film?

■ 2. What is Doc Holliday’s (Val Kilmer) most famous line from 1993’s “Tombstone,” based in part on the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral?

■ 3. Speaking of that famous battle between Wyatt Earp and company and the Clanton gang, 1957’s “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” starring Burt Lancaster as Wyatt Earp and Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday deviated from the facts greatly, but 10 years later the same director, John Sturges, revisited the material more faithfully in “Hour of the Gun,” starring what famous TV western star as Earp?

■ 4. What actor played Doc Holliday in 1971’s “Doc,” Bad Bob in 1972’s “The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean” and Frank James in 1980’s “The Long Riders,” as well as was the narrator for Ridley Scott’s fittingly named 1977 directorial debut, “The Duellists”?

■ 5. One of filmdom’s fictional Western gunfights is also one of its most acclaimed. In 1952’s “High Noon,” Gary Cooper won an Oscar for playing a small-town marshal, who must face a band of killers alone at the appointed hour when the town forsakes him. But his young deputy was played by an actor whose son is mentioned elsewhere in this quiz. Whoishe?

■ 6. What actor was originally offered the part of the deputy in “High Noon,” but refused the director’s request to have his nose fixed to appear more sympathetic? He later appeared in classic gunfight movies like “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” and “For a Few Dollars More.”

■ 7. Match the following actors with the movie in which they played Old West outlaw Billy the Kid.

1. Paul Newman 2. Kris Kristofferson 3. Emilio Estevez 4. Michael J. Pollard

A. “Dirty Little Billy” B. “Young Guns” C. “The Left Handed Gun” D. “Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid”

■ 8. Sharon Stone played a female gunslinger in 1995’s “The Quick and the Dead,” alongside Gene Hackman, Leonardo Dicaprio and what future Oscar winner making his American film debut?

■ 9. Kevin Costner played the title character in 1994’s “Wyatt Earp,” while Dennis Quaid was the mustached lawman in “Tombstone.” The two stars teamed up in what 2001 Elvis impersonator action comedy?

■ 10. In 1995’s “Wild Bill,” Jeff Bridges played Hickok at the end of his life, alongside another member of a famous acting family as Buffalo Bill Cody. This actor earlier starred with his brothers in 1980’s “The Long Riders” and later took on Hickok himself in the HBO series “Deadwood.” Name him. he was also one of the stars of “The Duellists” mentioned in question 4.)
