Cuomo, Schumer tapped to speak
Will give addresses during Democratic National Convention
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer will give addresses at the Democratic National Convention, the convention committee announced Tuesday morning.
The convention scheduled for Aug. 17 to 20 will feature more than 30 speakers, all Democrats except Republican John Kasich, the former governor of Ohio. From New York, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-cortez, D-bronx, will also speak at the event.
Each night, the convention will be livestreamed from 9 to 11 p.m. with speakers joining from locations across the country. Cuomo is scheduled to speak on
Aug. 17 on the theme of “We the People,” after winning significant national attention in 2020 for his handling of the state’s coronavirus pandemic. Schumer is scheduled to give an address on Aug. 18 with the theme “Leadership Matters.”
Other speakers include former President Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-calif., and presumptive nominee Joe Biden’s primary challengers: Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Dmass.; Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J.; South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg; Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-minn.; and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-VT. Sen. Kamala Harris, a former challenger and Biden’s running mate, will also speak.
Both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions will be largely virtual events this year with few individuals traveling to Milwaukee, the Democratic host city. Former Vice President Joe Biden has said he will accept the party’s nomination from his home state of Delaware on Aug. 20. New York delegates will not travel to Milwaukee.
