LSU CB Stingley ready to get to practice

LSU All-america cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. could return to practice as soon as Tuesday and possibly play Saturday at Vanderbilt, coach Ed Orgeron said.

Stingley, who also returns punts and is widely considered one of the top players in all of college football, missed LSU’S season-opening 4434 loss to Mississipp­i State on Saturday after being hospitaliz­ed with a sudden and acute illness Friday night. LSU officials have not provided specifics about Stingley ’s diagnosis but have stressed that his illness was not COVID -19.

More college football: The Memphis Tigers will play host to Houston on Dec. 5 in a game reschedule­d by the AAC because of COVID-19 testing results. The teams were scheduled to play Sept. 18 before positive tests and contact tracing at Memphis forced the postponeme­nt on Sept. 12.

Soccer: Genoa says another 12 members of the match squad have the coronaviru­s, taking the total number of cases at the Serie A club to 14. It was revealed over the weekend that goalkeeper Mattia Perin and midfielder Lasse Schone contracted the virus. ... Ten people tested positive for the coronaviru­s in the latest round of checks in the English Premier League. A total of 1,595 players and club staff were tested last week, the league said. West Ham confirmed last week that three people — including manager David Moyes — had COVID-19. ... Fulham maintained its unwanted record of conceding at least three goals in each game since the team’s return to the English Premier League by losing to Aston Villa 3-0. ... Sixteen months later, Manchester City has finally found a replacemen­t for long-time captain Vincent Kompany. Portugal internatio­nal Ruben Dias was on the verge of joining City from Benfica, with the Portuguese team saying the center back was moving for a fee of $78 million. In return, Benfica said, Nicolas Otamendi would be joining the club from City for $17.2 million.
