Four share first-round Sanderson Farms lead

JACKSON, Miss. — Former PGA champion Jimmy Walker wasn’t feeling his best and wasn’t sure what to expect, especially after missing two short birdie putts to begin the opening round Thursday in the Sanderson Farms Championsh­ip.

It turned out to be his best start in more than two years. His 8-under 64 joined Charley Hoffman, Kevin Chappell and Sebastian Munoz atop the leaderboar­d. Michael Glijic and MJ Daffue were at 65.

More golf: Lee Westwood shot a 9-under 62 that included two eagles, giving him a one-stroke lead over Alexander Bjork and Joost Luiten after the first round of the Scottish Open. ... Lauren Stephenson holed out from the rough from 137 yards for eagle on the par-4 14th and shot an 8under 63 for a share of the Shoprite LPGA Classic lead with Mi Hyang Lee.

Auto racing: Indycar has announced a 17-race schedule for 2021 that includes a stop at Texas Motor Speedway before the Indianapol­is 500 and a stop in Nashville.

Horse racing: The champion jockey of British horse racing has tested positive for cocaine. Oisin Murphy returned a positive test for metabolite­s of the drug in a test undertaken in France on July 19, a statement from the Profession­al Jockeys Associatio­n read on Thursday. He denied ever taking cocaine.

Soccer: Barcelona beat Celta

XFL: After two failed launches and a bankruptcy, the XFL is getting set for a third try that even the league’s new owner Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson acknowledg­es will be a challenge. The potential rival to the National Football League was sold while in bankruptcy in August to a group of investors for $15 million. Johnson said in a post that play would resume in 2022.
