Ronaldo rape case pointed toward trial

LAS VEGAS — Cristiano Ronaldo’s legal fight with a woman who accuses the internatio­nal soccer star of raping her in his suite at a Las Vegas resort more than 10 years ago is heading toward a trial before a federal judge in Nevada.

No date was immediatel­y set, but U.S. District Judge Jennifer Dorsey said she will hear arguments and decide herself whether Kathryn Mayorga was mentally fit to enter a 2010 hush-money agreement with Ronaldo’s representa­tives that paid Mayorga $375,000.

It was not immediatel­y clear whether Ronaldo or Mayorga will have to be in court in person when a trial is held.

Cycling: Arnaud Demare won the first mass sprint of the Giro d’italia in a three-way photo finish on Tuesday ahead of Peter Sagan and Davide Ballerini. Joao Almeida added a couple of seconds to his overall lead in the fourth stage.

NBA: Jrue Holiday of the New Orleans Pelicans is the winner of the Twyman-stokes Teammate of the Year award. NBA players chose the winner from a field of 12 finalists. Holiday received 53 of 267 first-place votes to win over Philadelph­ia’s Tobias Harris (48 first-place votes).

NHL: The Washington Capitals re-signed defenseman Brenden Dillon to a $15.6 million, fouryear contract, and said that defenseman Michal Kempny would miss six to eight months following surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon. ... The Detroit Red Wings placed forward Justin Abdelkader on unconditio­nal waivers for the purpose of buying out his contract. The Montreal Canadiens did the same with defenseman Karl Alzner, who had been relegated to the minors for much of last season. Abdelkader had three years remaining on his contract at a salary cap hit of $4.25 million. His buyout will span six years for Detroit. Alzner’s buyout is four years since he had two years left at a $4.625 million cap hit.
