Rangers sign Lafreniere, NHL’S top overall pick

The New York Rangers agreed to terms Monday on a three-year, entry-level deal with No. 1 draft pick Alexis Lafreniere, who is expected to play in the NHL when next season

starts.

The left winger signed a day after turning 19.

The league is targeting a Jan. 1 start for what it hopes to be an 82-game 2021 season.

More NHL: The Montreal Canadiens signed forward Tyler Toffoli to a four-year deal on Monday. The deal carries an average annual value of $4.25 million. Toffoli played 10 regularsea­son games for the Vancouver Canucks this season after being acquired in a February trade from the Los Angeles Kings. ... The Chicago Blackhawks agreed to one-year contracts with Mattias Janmark and Lucas Wallmark on Monday, adding a pair of forwards to help make up for the loss of Brandon Saad, who was traded to Colorado on Saturday. Obituary: Charlie Moore, the 400-meter hurdles champion at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, died Thursday from pancreatic cancer. He was 91. Cornell University also confirmed the passing of the school’s former athletic director and star athlete.
