Stewart’s shuttering 2 stores

Lack of space cited at Wappingers Falls and Burnt Hills locations

- By Eric Anderson

Stewart’s Shops said Friday that the Saratoga Springsbased company will close shops in Burnt Hills and in Wappingers Falls.

The Burnt Hills store at 710 Saratoga Road will close on Sunday, Oct. 25, while the Wappingers Falls store at 2048 Route 9D will close on Nov. 8.

“Unfortunately, these shops do not have the ability to accommodate the equipment or space needs to expand foodto-go offerings or gasoline and cannot expand with their ever growing customer needs,” Stewart’s said in the closing announcement. “The inability

to expand coupled with rising costs have made the closures necessary.”

The company has been on a multi-year expansion, replacing or remodeling existing

stores and building new ones that are typically much larger, with enhanced food offerings including prepared foods, and additional gasoline pumps.

“These closures are not a reflection of the company overall; Stewart’s Shops continues to grow,” the company said. “They’re expanding to new markets and rebuilding and improving existing locations where they are seeing growth.

“In 2020, Stewart’s Shops is celebrating 75 years and will again invest over $45 million in construction of new shops and shop additions, with 19 new and rebuilt shops planned,” it said. “All Partners have been offered opportunities in nearby locations.”

The company operates more than 335 shops in upstate New York and Vermont.
