Syracuse wins league opener

Orange pick up their first win at Miami since 2016

Kamilla Cardoso and Tiana Mangakahia scored 14 points apiece and

No. 20 Syracuse beat Miami 69-58 on Thursday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference season opener.

Syracuse (4-0) won at Watsco Center for the first time since Feb. 1, 2016.

Cardoso, a 6-foot-7 freshman center from Montes Claros, Brazil, scored 12 points in the first half and finished 5-for-9 from the field. Mangakahia scored all 14 points in the second half and had a game-high seven assists.

Digna Strautmane, a senior forward who played all 31 games last season, added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Orange.

Destiny Harden scored 11 points to lead Miami (3-1). Kelsey Marshall was just 2-for-11 from long range to finish with six points. She had 74 3pointers last season, fifth best in the program.

Arizona 65, Arizona State 37:

Aari Mcdonald had 22 points and made five 3-pointers and No. 6 Arizona quickly turned its rivalry game against Arizona State into a rout. The Wildcats (4-0, 3-0 Pac-12) had to eke out a win over Southern California on Sunday, but were control from the start against Arizona State (4-2, 1-2). Taya Hanson led Arizona State with 14 points.

Baylor 65, West Virginia 45:

Dijonai Carrington scored 14 of her 19 points in the decisive third quarter and No. 7 Baylor beat West Virginia in its Big 12 opener. Moon Ursin added 12 points and eight rebounds to help the Lady Bears (3-1) bounce back from an 83-78 loss at No. 13 Arkansas on Sunday. Kirsten Deans led the Mountainee­rs (4-1) with 10 points.

Texas A&M 79, ArkansasLi­ttle Rock 56: Aaliyah Wilson scored 13 points, Destiny Pitts had 12 on 4-for-8 3-point shooting and No. 10 Texas A&M (5-0) beat Arkansas-little Rock. Mississipp­i State transfer Bre’amber Scott led the Trojans (2-2) with 21 points.

Northweste­rn 93, Eastern Illinois 57: Veronica Burton scored 21 points, Lindsey Pulliam added 18 and No. 17 Northweste­rn opened its season with a blowout victory. Morgan Litwiller scored 13 points for Eastern Illinois (2-3).

Ohio State 104, Miami (Ohio) 65:

Dorka Juhasz matched her career high with 27 points and had 15 rebounds in No. 18 Ohio State’s blowout victory. Juhasz was 11 of 16 from the field for the Buckeyes (4-0). Peyton Scott scored 22 points for Miami (1-2).

Kansas State 62, South Dakota State 53: Ayoka Lee had 18 points and nine rebounds and Kansas State took control early against No. 22 South Dakota State (3-1). Kansas State (3-2) had a 12-1 run to take a 20-7 lead after the first quarter.
