Giants QB has a hamstring problem and lower leg issue

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is dealing with two injuries and his status for Sunday night’s big game against Cleveland is uncertain.

Coach Joe Judge disclosed Wednesday that the second-year quarterback has an injury to his lower left leg in addition to a hamstring problem from a game against Cincinnati on Nov. 29.

Jones, who practiced on a limited basis Wednesday, said the ankle injury happened midway though Sunday’s 26-7 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on a quarterback hit. He added the hamstring problem did not either cause or contribute to the injury to his left ankle.

The loss to the Cardinals knocked the Giants (5-8) out of first place in the NFC East with three games left in the regular season. It also put more importance on beating the Browns (9-4).

Judge wants to see how Jones looks this week in practice, adding whether he plays might come down to a game-time decision.

If Jones cannot play, Colt Mccoy would get his second start in three games. Mccoy started against Seattle and led the

Giants to an unexpected 17-12 win.

Jones returned to the starting lineup in the loss to the Cardinals but he was ineffective. He did not attempt to rush one for the first time in his career and the Arizona defense limited New York to a season-low 159 yards and recorded eight sacks, six against Jones.

Jets: The end seems inevitable after just two seasons for coach Adam Gase, whose 0-13 team appears on a collision course with dubious NFL history. The Jets have three more games to avoid joining the 2008 Detroit Lions and 2017 Cleveland Browns as the league’s only 0-16 teams.

And for that, and the dismal state of the team, Gase feels he has let Jets CEO and president Christopher Johnson down.

“Yes,” Gase said without hesitation. “I’ve tried to figure out where things went wrong, what can we change? You’re

trying to evaluate things as you go and adjust to try to fix whatever the issue would be for that month or that three games or four games.

“At the end of the day, it’s about winning. We haven’t done that. For him not to feel a playoff feel of being competitive in December, it’s disappointing to me that we haven’t been able to do that for him.”

Owners meeting: NFL owners have delayed a decision on implementing a 17-game regular season for 2021.

During a teleconference call Wednesday that replaced the usual December gathering of owners in Dallas, they opted to push back any move on the expanded season until early in 2021.

The NFL and the players’ union agreed during collective bargaining talks earlier this year to adding one regular-season game to the schedule, but not before next season.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said a scheduling formula for a 17th game was approved unanimously, but did not immediately provide details.
