La Russa plea deal ends DUI case

PHOENIX — Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa pleaded guilty to a lesser charge to resolve misdemeano­r drunken driving charges stemming from his arrest nearly 10 months ago on a freeway in metro

Phoenix.

The 76-year-old La Russa pleaded guilty Monday to reckless driving in Maricopa County Justice Court. La Russa was sentenced to one day of home detention, fined nearly $1,400 and is required to complete 20 hours of community service.

More MLB: After 15 seasons, Washington, Howie Kendrick has retired from baseball. The 37-year-old announced his decision in an Instagram post Monday evening. He did so just a week after Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo said they expected Kendrick to return in 2021. But Kendrick had considered retirement before signing to play for the Nationals last season, and he chose this time to do that. ... Golf: Lee Westwood has been voted as the European Tour’s golfer of the year for 2020.

Tennis: Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Frances Tiafoe were among the winners of the ATP’S top awards for 2020 on Monday. Djokovic was the year-end No. 1 for a record-tying sixth time. Federer was the tour’s most popular player. Nadal received the Stefan Edberg Sportsmans­hip Award for the third year straight and Tiafoe the Arthur Ashe Humanitari­an Award.
