Sabres’ Eichel misses start of camp with injury
Buffalo Sabres captain Jack Eichel missed Friday ’s first training camp practice with an upper-body injury sustained in training and is listed as day to day.
Goaltender Linus Ullmark also sat out while quarantining due to an immigration issue.
More NHL: The NHL is planning to hold two outdoor games at Lake Tahoe in February, a source said. The Vegas Golden Knights will play the Colorado Avalanche on Feb. 20. The next day, the Philadelphia Flyers will host the Boston Bruins. A rink will be built around the picturesque 16th, 17th and 18th holes on the golf course at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nev. The games will reportedly be part of the NHL’S “Outdoor Weekend” and be televised by NBC. This will be the first outdoor game for the Golden Knights, who entered the NHL for the 2017-2018 season. ... Boo Nieves, a free-agent forward from Baldwinsville, near Syracuse, has been invited to the Tampa Bay Lightning preseason camp on a tryout contract. Last year, he posted five goals and 22 helpers in 43 games for Hartford of the AHL and was pointless in four games with the N.Y. Rangers.
College football: USC defensive lineman Marlon Tuipulotu and cornerback Olaijah Griffin are headed to the NFL draft following their junior seasons. ... Clint Bowen is leaving North Texas after only one season as defensive coordinator, a move that coach Seth Littrell says was a mutual decision. The Mean Green finished 4-6 this season, and were last in Conference USA allowing 522 total yards and nearly 43 points a game. They lost 56-28 to Appalachian State in the Myrtle Beach Bowl.
