Oilers end drought in victory vs. Leafs

Draisaitl’s goal snaps Edmonton’s power-play futility

- Toronto

Leon Draisaitl broke a tie on a power play midway through the third period in the Edmonton Oilers’ 3-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.

Draisaitl scored with Jake Muzzin in the penalty box for tripping, firing home a loose puck after Ryan Nugent-hopkins took the initial shot. The reigning Hart Trophy and Art Ross Trophy winner ended the Oilers’ 0-for-12 power-play drought.

Kailer Yamamoto was credited with the opening goal for Edmonton after the Maple Leafs fumbled the puck into their own net in the first.

Mikko Koskinen made 25 saves, Josh Archibald scored into an empty net with 1:06 left, and Connor Mcdavid had two assists.

Auston Matthews scored for Toronto, and Frederik Andersen made 19 saves.

Note: Florida coach Joel Quenneville already has a raspierthan-usual voice after the Panthers’ first two games of the season. Screaming over crowd noise isn’t easy. Florida is one of only three teams that is permitting fans back into arenas for the start of this season. The Panthers averaged 3,907 fans in their season-opening wins over Chicago earlier this week; Arizona averaged 2,329 in its first two home games. Dallas, which plays its opener at home Friday after a COVID-19 outbreak delayed the start of the Stars’ season, is also planning to have fans in its building. “Our building, no matter how many people are in the building, it gets loud,” Quenneville said.
