50 YEARS AGO Capital Region is filling up
Official 1970 census figures disclosed all communities in the Capital Region showed increases in population over preliminary numbers released last summer. Albany County’s official 1970 population numbers were 285,618, higher than July’s preliminary 280,120. The city of Albany also gained several hundred people from last summer, with its official population listed as 114,873 compared to the preliminary 113,988. However, that was still a decrease since 1960 of 14,853 residents. The town of Colonie, which had raised one of the loudest stinks when a preliminary figure of 66,288 had been announced, was happy to find the official number at 69, 147, much closer to expectations of town leaders. Rensselaer County’s population was 152,218, Saratoga’s was 121,679, Schenectady’s 160,979. Government administrators were pleased.
