Troy eyes options to reopen marina
City taking bids for parties to run facility after 5-year hiatus for repairs, upgrades
The city plans to reopen its downtown marina this summer after a fiveyear hiatus during which the Hudson River seawall was rebuilt and a new dock master’s house, showers and bathrooms were installed for boaters.
The marina, which traditionally had docks along the Hudson River from Riverfront Park north past the Green Island Bridge shut down in 2016. It had been heavily damaged by Tropical Storm in Irene in 2011 when the Hudson rose, overwhelming the marina docks.
The city is seeking a company to operate the city marina. It issued requests for proposals Thursday.
At one time, there were marinas operating in Green Island as well as Troy’s. But development in Green Island and the $26.8 million seawall project saw the riverfront amenities disappear. The new marina was part of the seawall project.
Boaters have provided a stream of visitors to downtown. Large tour boats have docked in the past to discharge passengers to take historic tours that featured Troy’s Victorian architecture and history.
The city’s restoration of the marina was completed last year as part of the wrap-up of the seawall project. The new riverside amenities include “free public access, fuel sales and daytime and overnight docking for travelers looking for amenities and supervision during their stay,” according to the city.
The city has created an “Ahoy Troy” Marina newsletter and a Troy Downtown Marina Facebook page to promote the marina.
“We’re excited to move ahead with reopening the Troy Downtown Marina this year, an important part of our efforts to restore public access to Troy’s valuable waterfront,” Mayor Patrick Madden said in a statement.
“This important facility offers new amenities that will attract local residents and visitors from across the Capital Region and beyond to explore what Troy has to offer, and I’m looking forward to welcoming boaters back to our community this summer,” Madden continued.
A March 31 deadline has been set to submit proposals to operate the marina. Copies of the RFP are available through the City’s Bureau of Contracts & Procurement by calling 518-279-7104 or emailing Claudia.mahoney@troyny.gov.
