Whitehead, Burgess

-

WATERVLIET — Burgess L. Whitehead entered into eternal life on March 15, 2021, at the age of 80.

Burgess was raised in Watervliet where he resided for his entire life. He was the son of the late Mary Ellen "Peg" Kerwood Whitehead and Charles Whitehead. He was employed as a porter at St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy for 30 years and later took employment with Barney’s Washer Service in Watervliet from where he retired. Burgess enjoyed walking through Watervliet and Troy and, once in a while, even to Latham to shop, meeting and chatting with people along the way. In his younger years he enjoyed taking bus or train trips to different parts of the county. Burgess loved to witness the changes that were occurring during his lifetime. He was an avid model train collector starting as a young child. He enjoyed drawing, whittling and fishing. Burgess often went to the R.P.I. Field House for roller derby, wrestling and hockey. Burgess could often be found, passing the time, by drawing or whittling while listening to his favorite music and in more recent years, as his health declined, he could be found sitting on the front porch speaking with his neighbors or anyone who passed by. Burgess will be remembered as a gentle man who never raised his voice in anger or had an unkind word for anyone. He will be missed. His family extends their appreciation and thanks to the nurses and staff of Community Hospice and the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home.

In addition to his parents, Burgess was predeceased by his brother, Thomas Whitehead. He is survived by his sister, Sharon Collen; and brother, Donnelly Whitehead; his nieces and nephews, Yolanda Burke, Tammy Forrester, April Allen, Sean Collen, Season Davenport, Sarah Cozzolino, Seth Collen, Shayne Collen, and Siobhan Macdonald; and several great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be held privately and interment will be in the Hudson View Cemetery, Mechanicville.

Donations, in his memory, may be made to the Community Hospice Foundation, 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY, 12208.
