Police assist distraught man

BROADALBIN — A man was saved and is being treated at Albany Medical Center Hospital after he threatened to light himself on fire and ran at police officers with a butcher knife in hand, authoritie­s said.

On Tuesday night, police received a call for a distraught man at Indian Village mobile home park who had poured kerosene or another accelerant on himself. Police said they were told he had been using drugs for several days and was having a possible severe psychotic episode.

Fulton County deputies and State Police were dispatched, and a State Police official tried to negotiate with the man for several hours. The victim threatened he would harm himself, or that he would force law enforcemen­t to shoot him. He started a fire in the residence, which was put out by Broadalbin and Perth fire fighters. The man then rushed out the front door with a butcher knife. Officers tasered him and he was flown to Albany Med with serious cuts.

Sheriff Richard Giardino credited the members of the county’s 911 communicat­ions center, road patrol officers and state troopers and investigat­ors for the safe result.

“Fortunatel­y luck was on our side Tuesday night and there were no injuries to family, neighbors, and fire or law enforcemen­t personnel,” the sheriff said in a statement. happened around 1:15 p.m. when the driver intentiona­lly sped into a group of seagulls, killing 13 of them.

Seagulls are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. Several of them had previously been caught and banded in parts of Canada.
