Rehfuss, Syracuse face big test

Shaker graduate and his team set to meet No. 2 Duke

Stephen Rehfuss is one of the top offensive players in Division I men’s lacrosse.

The Syracuse redshirt senior attack from Latham and a Shaker High graduate leads the Orange with 12 goals, 13 assists and 25 points. His assists per game (2.60) stands 19th and his points per game average (5.00) is tied for 21st on the NCAA leaderboar­d.

Rehfuss, a transfer from Holy Cross, has scored 64 goals with 93 assists for 157 points with four game-winners in 50 career games. He earned All-america honorable mention by Inside Lacrosse after scoring two goals with 18 assists to help Syracuse post a 5-0 record during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Sophomore Lucas Quinn of Niskayuna (Niskayuna High) and freshman Liam Ferris of Bethlehem (Bethlehem Central) come off the bench for the team. Quinn has six goals, Ferris one.

The 4-1 Orange are ranked fourth in the nation after a 15-6 victory over Holy Cross last Saturday. Rehfuss had two goals and two assists against his former college team. He spent one season there and didn’t play. Syracuse faces its toughest game of the season when it travels to Durham, N.C. to face No. 2 Duke (8-0) on Thursday.

Maggie Wyngowski (Niskayuna)

The senior and the Bucknell women’s swim team kicked off their spring season with a 158-139 Patriot League victory over Army last Saturday in West Point. The versatile Niskayuna High graduate had a big meet. She captured the 1,000 freestyle in 10 minutes, 32.16 seconds and the 200 backstroke in 2:08.24. And she finished second in the 200 individual medley in 2:07.17. Wyngowski is a three-time Patriot first-team selection, has earned five medals in league championsh­ip meets and is the reigning champion in the 400 IM.

Shai Young (Albany)

The 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore is listed as a wide receiver on the Bryant football roster, but the Colonie High graduate is playing in the backfield for the 2-1 Bulldogs this season. In a 14-7

victory over Merrimack on March 14, Young scored his first collegiate touchdown (3-yard run) and carried the ball 15 times for 54 yards. Last Saturday, in a 27-7 triumph over Wagner, he was the team’s top rusher with 57 yards on 10 carries and scored his second touchdown of the season.

Amanda Chrzanowsk­i (Schenectad­y)

The senior right-hander is a key performer for the Fairleigh Dickinson women’s bowling team this season. The 35-3 Knights earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament next month by capturing the Northeast Conference title with a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart on March 21 in Hamilton, N.J. The Colonie High graduate was named an All-american by the National Tenpin Coaches Associatio­n last season. She was an ALL-NEC pick as a sophomore and junior and made the All-rookie team as a freshman.

Jimmy Joyce (Niskayuna)

The 6-1, 193-pound sophomore made his first collegiate start for the Holy Cross men’s soccer team and his effort in a 2-1 loss to Lafayette on March 13 earned him Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, it was announced on March 16. The Niskayuna High graduate made four saves in the game. The Crusaders are 1-1 on the season after a 2-1 league victory over Army last

Saturday in West Point. Joyce didn’t play in the game.

Hannah Ragule (Cohoes)

The Nazareth freshman captured the triple jump (34 feet, 11 ¼ inches) to help her team finish second at the Empire 8 Indoor Track Championsh­ip March 19-20 in Rochester. The Cohoes High graduate also finished third in the long jump (16-2 ¼). Nazareth freshman Lea Richard of Gansevoort (South Glens Falls High) finished first in the weight throw (49-7). Sophomore Megan Morin of Greenfield Center (Saratoga High) was third in the 5,000-meter race (19:23.65) for the Golden Flyers.

Chloe Jones (Slingerlan­ds)

The 5-6 senior midfielder is seeing action off the bench for the Virginia women’s lacrosse team. The Cavaliers are 6-2 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after a 17-8 loss to No. 10 Duke in a league game on March 19 in Charlottes­ville, Va. Jones had two assists in the game. The Lawrencevi­lle School (N.J.) graduate has four goals and four assists for eight points. She also has four ground balls and seven draw controls. Jones has scored 11 points in 34 career games with Virginia.
