Spectrum 8 Theatres, closed for over a year, will reopen Friday with a collection of Oscar-nominated live-action and animated shorts.

The Spectrum 8 Theatres, closed for more than a year and one of only two cinemas in the city, will reopen Friday, its owner, Los Angeles-based Landmark Theatres, announced Tuesday.

The movies opening Friday are “Godzilla vs. Kong,” “French Exit,” “The Father,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Mank,” “Promising Young Woman” and a collection of Oscarnominated live-action and animated shorts, according to a Landmark spokeswoman.

The news comes a day after the region’s largest chain, Regal Cinemas, said that it will open its theaters at Colonie Center mall in Colonie and Crossgates Mall in Guilderland on April 16. Theaters at Clifton Park Center mall in Clifton Park and at Aviation Mall in Queensbury will open May 14, with the Regal theaters in East Greenbush returning May 21, the company said.

Movie theaters across New York were closed by state order at the beginning of the pandemic last March. Cinemas outside New York City were allowed to reopen in October, but after just three weeks, Regal closed its Capital Region locations as COVID-19 cases again surged. Landmark announced a Nov. 13 reopening for the Spectrum 8 Theatres but called it off. The other national chain serving the area, Bow Tie Cinemas, reopened locations in Schenectady and Saratoga Springs in December. Its Wilton Mall cinema, however, never reopened, was removed from the company website and had its signs taken down at the mall earlier this month.

The independently owned Madison Theatre in Albany and Scotia Cinema in Scotia have been open since late fall.
