Remember small businesses in COVID-19 recovery efforts

-

As we reflect on the past year, what we learned throughout the public health crisis has proven invaluable. One of the enduring lessons of the pandemic is the importance of reliable access to internet and technology platforms for small businesses to function in difficult times.

Small businesses have faced unique challenges that offer insights into the future of business operations. While fitnessoriented businesses like mine were forced to shutter, we were able to adapt to the “new normal” using digital video platforms, online communication tools and cloud services to continue training clients remotely.

The digital infrastructure we’ve used to stay in touch with one another has become the backbone of our daily operations. We utilize Zoom calls to connect clients with trainers and Gmail and Google calendar keep track of our schedules. Social media platforms and search engine listings have kept our clients, current and new, up to date on the services offered and how we’re working to keep everyone safe.

As our lawmakers in Albany rightfully focus on economic revival this year, it is crucial they keep in mind the voices of small businesses whose survival depends on access to digital business technologies. Our leaders must support access to technology if they hope to uplift local communities that economically need all the support from government policy they can get. Lisa Yakel
