High-end furniture sale set by Lions

60th annual event to benefit projects in Granville area

- By Eric Anderson

For the past 59 years, the Granville Lions Club has conducted a sale of high-end outdoor furniture produced by Granville-based Telescope Casual Furniture. The sale items, close-outs and overstocks, have attracted shoppers looking for bargains.

The Lions Club, meanwhile, has raised more than $2 million over that time period to donate to local projects, ranging from a newly purchased building for the Granville Food Pantry and support for the library and museums, to Habitat for Humanity, local scholarships, and sight and hearing initiatives.

The 60th sale begins Friday, April 30, and continues through August. Hours are 5 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

The sale takes place at the Lions’ warehouses behind the town’s post office on Main Street in Granville.

“Last year was an extraordinary year,” said Linda Ellingsworth, a spokeswoman for the Lions Club. “Everybody stayed home,” investing in and enjoying their backyards. While state restrictions delayed the start of last year’s sale until

June, once it opened, the demand reached record levels.

Telescope sells the furniture to the Lions Club “at a little discount,” Ellingsworth said, providing the club with a list of available items from which to choose. Because the sale is conducted by Lions Club volunteers, and the club owns its own warehouses, overhead costs are minimal.

“It’s a wonderful relationship with Telescope,” she added. “It’s all first quality.”

Customers at this year’s sale will be required to wear face masks and maintain social distancing. Hand sanitizer will be available at the checkout counter. The Lions Club accepts both Visa and Mastercard for purchases.

Both warehouses have been fully restocked, following last year’s record demand, the club said in a press release.
