Kelleher twirls big games for ’Cats
Senior left-hander from Schuylerville is 3-1 with 1.08 ERA for Cazenovia
Lauren Kelleher was named North Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week after a big effort for the Cazenovia softball team.
Kelleher, a senior left-hander from Schuylerville and a Schuylerville High graduate, tossed two complete seveninning games, both victories over SUNY-POLY. In a 5-1 victory April 7, she gave up one earned run on seven hits and struck out five. In a 6-4 triumph on April 10, Kelleher didn’t give up an earned run and struck out nine. She also did a job at the plate, going 8-for-15 (.533) in four games.
She plays shortstop when she isn’t pitching.
Junior Caitlin Kelleher, Lauren’s sister, is playing third base and leads the Wildcats in hitting with a .469 average (15-for-32). Lauren is hitting .424 (14for-33). In the field, the sisters have had a combined 85 chances and have not made an error.
Cazenovia is 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the NAC after beating Cobleskill 6-4 and 6-4 April 10 in Cazenovia. Lauren got the victory in the first game and is 3-1 with a 1.08 earned-run average. In 26 innings, she has given up 35 hits and 12 runs, just four earned, with five walks and 20 strikeouts.
Sophia Calabrese (Bethlehem)
The senior scored three goals and had an assist, but the Oneonta women’s lacrosse team dropped a 15-9 decision to rival Cortland on Monday. The Bethlehem High graduate still had a milestone performance. The three goals gave her 102 in her career. The assist gave her 36 career helpers and a total of 138 points. She has eight goals and four assists this season. Oneonta also gets scoring help from junior Rachel Morris of East Greenbush (Columbia High) with seven goals and an assist, and junior Tessa Hughes of Delmar (Bethlehem High) with four goals and an assist.
Samantha Dayter (Cohoes)
The Suny-canton junior midfielder was named the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Week in women’s lacrosse. The Cohoes High graduate had four goals and two assists in an 11-9 victory over Cazenovia on April 8 and came back with four goals and two assists in a 14-11 loss to Cazenovia on April 10. Both were NAC contests and lifted the Kangaroos to 1-4 on the season. A transfer from SUNY Poly, Dayter is also a member of the Canton women’s basketball team.
Anthony Sericolo (Altamont)
The sophomore scored two goals to help the Hartford men’s lacrosse team snap a five-game season-opening losing streak with an 8-7 win over Binghamton in an America East Conference contest on April 10 in Vestal. The Albany Academy graduate leads the Hawks with 11 points on 10 goals and an assist. He had three goals in a 12-10 loss to Umass Lowell on March 13 and has scored at least one point in all six games.
Joey Kosowsky (Troy)
The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team is 3-14, and the junior has two of the victories. The Lansingburgh High graduate has made six starts for the Knights and is 2-1 with a 4.37 ERA. In 222⁄3 innings, he has given up 19 runs on 24 hits — 11 earned — with 16 walks and a team-high 27 strikeouts. He earned his first win when he went five innings in a 7-3 triumph over Wagner on March 20. He had 10 strikeouts in the game. Kosowsky worked five innings to earn the victory in a 5-2 win over Central Connecticut on March 27.
Aaron Carrk (Delmar)
The 6-foot-4 senior, a Bethlehem High graduate, and junior Brendan Spulnick of Clifton Park (Shenendehowa High) had solid efforts, but the New Paltz men’s volleyball team lost the United Volleyball Conference title with a 3-1 loss to Vassar on April 11 in New Paltz.
The Hawks were the defending champions and went on to capture the Division III NCAA title. Carrk had eight kills, eight digs and three blocks. He finished the season with 86 kills, 56 digs and 10 blocks. Spulnick had six kills, two service aces and three blocks. He had 124 kills, 49 digs and 22 service aces on the season.
