Girl, 16, hit and killed by car in Colonie
A volunteer firefighter struck a 16-year-old Albany girl with his car Thursday evening, killing her by accident, police said.
At around 10:38 p.m., Albany High School student San-ya Blaylock finished her shift at Kentucky Fried Chicken on 1235 Central Ave. As she crossed over to the bus stop on the south side of the street, the 20-year-old firefighter from Colonie struck Blaylock with his 2009 Hyundai in the westbound lane.
Police said the vehicle hit the teen near the intersection of Central Avenue and Frederick Avenue.
Police said the driver got out of his car, moved the girl out of the travel lane and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Another firefighter and a
police officer arrived at the scene and tried to assist Blaylock, police said.
As Colonie EMS arrived, Blaylock had already died from her injuries, police said. The driver was not injured in the crash.
Lt. Daniel Belles said he does not believe speed or impairment was a factor in the crash and confirmed that Blaylock had not used a crosswalk when she was crossing the street.
Police said the driver is cooperating with the investigation.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Colonie police at 518-782-2620.
The Albany City School District deployed a crisis response team to the high school Friday following news of Blaylock's death, said district spokesman Ron Lesko. The team will be back next week to provide counseling to anyone who may need it, he said.
