Scotties hold off Blue Devils

Ballston Spa wins battle of Suburban unbeatens

Ballston Spa edged rival Columbia, 3-1, on Wednesday in a matchup of unbeaten Suburban Council baseball squads.

The defending Class A state champion Scotties held a 2-0 lead before Columbia’s Kyle Blake drove in a run in the fifth to cut the Ballston Spa advantage to just a run. But the Blue Devils could not push across that game-tying run, and the Scotties added an insurance run in the sixth to pull away with the win.

Ballston Spa improved to 2-0 with the victory while Columbia fell to 4-1.

More baseball: Troy Butler and Manley Baker combined on a five-inning no-hitter to lead Fort Plain to a 16-0 win over visiting Schoharie in a Western Athletic Conference game. Butler, who has committed to the University at Binghamton, also starred on offense, adding a single, triple and three RBIS to his 11 strikeouts on the mound.

Softball: Jordyn Wozniak tossed a no-hitter to help Amsterdam get past Gloversvil­le, 4-0, in a Foothills Council clash . ... Ballston Spa used a four-run fourth inning to rally past Columbia, 7-6, in a Suburban Council contest. The Blue Devils scored three runs in the top half of the fourth to take a 6-3 advantage, but the Scotties sealed the win with the four-run bottom half of the frame, keyed by a Taylor O’brien RBI double.

Boys’ lacrosse: Burnt Hills scored 16 goals in the first quarter on the way to a 26-2 win over La Salle. Caeden Lapietro had seven goals and four assists to lead the Spartans.

Girls’ lacrosse: Queensbury erupted for 30 goals and rolled to a 26-goal victory over visiting Amsterdam in a Foothills Council matchup.
