Guilderland wins on Senior Day

Lady Dutch defeat Eagles at Afrim’s Sports Park

A constant downpour was not enough to halt Guilderland as it topped Bethlehem 4-0 on Senior Day at Afrim's Sports Park in Colonie on Monday afternoon.

Guilderland, which is seeking to build a multipurpose turf field as part of a capital project that goes before voters in the district on Thursday, would not have been able to play host to the game on the grass fields at the high school due to the heavy rain.

"Lucky for us we play at Afrim's Sports Park on turf so the game did not need to be canceled due to rain," said Guilderland coach Jennifer Sykes. "The turf remains safe even in heavy rain so we played both the varsity and JV games today."

Senior Chelsea King led the way with a goal and an assist, while fellow seniors Meg Collins and Julia Coton also added goals.

Skyler Van Wormer finished the scoring for Guilderland, which found the goal twice in each of the first two quarters.

"I could not be more proud of how all nine seniors who started today's contest came out ready to play," Sykes said. "They scored two quick goals and you could see their excitement for each other as they competed together."

Bethlehem goalie Teagan Rosencranse finished with 10 saves for the Eagles, helping to keep the Lady Dutch off the scoreboard in the second half.

With the win, Guilderland is 8-2 in the Suburban Council with four games remaining in the regular season.
