Saratoga Springs incident results in robbery, assault charges

Four people were charged after police allege a group retaliated against another group they were arguing with earlier on Friday evening, hitting a woman repeatedly in the head with a cellphone, and assaulting others while stealing items from them in a downtown parking lot.

The four charged with various robbery and assault charges in the incident, which happened around 3 a.m. Saturday, are in their late 20s to early 30s, and from Saratoga Springs, Hudson

Former Albany resident Audrey Munson — world famous model and sculptor’s muse, the basis for The Spirit of Life statue in Saratoga Springs’ Congress Park, and the woman now regarded as “America’s first supermodel” — went on trial in St. Louis, Missouri, on a charge of nude posing. The specific charge was for conspiracy to commit acts injurious to public morals. Munson had posed for photos on a platform in front of a screen in the Royal Theatre dressed in a gauzy gown with a spotlight thrown on her, an act that prompted several ministers to voice their disapprova­l and agree to testify in court. Munson and her manager, Ben Judell, said they would produce the photo in the courtroom to show that it was “pure” if necessary. Before the trial began, she issued this statement: “A girl sitting on the edge of a table, wearing fine silk hosiery, abbreviate­d skirts and her legs crossed, is not what I consider immoral posing.” — Times Union, Oct. 5, 1921

The city of Albany would contribute $11,000 to the Voluntary Action Center in Albany if a recommenda­tion by Mayor Erastus Corning were approved. VAC addressed various urban and rural problems through community volunteers. Formerly the Volunteer Bureau, VAC was part of the Council of Community Services and had been started four years ago by the Junior League of Albany. Its local thrust was to put the volunteers in touch with the critical community needs and to back them up with local resources including public, private and voluntary aid. Black city residents made up one fourth of the board. Corning said he would ask the Board of Estimate and Apportionm­ent to approve the money.

Police said the two groups had “an exchange of words earlier in the night,” but did not know each other before.

Police said based on descriptio­ns from the victims, the suspects were located a short time later on Woodlawn Avenue. The suspects also stole — Times Union, Oct. 5, 1971 various items from the victims, police said.

A 32-year-old Rensselaer woman faces the most serious charges of first-degree robbery and second-degree assault, for allegedly hitting the female victim in the face with a cell phone.
