Collision kills 2 in Canajoharie
Pickup truck, UTV hit head-on; alcohol seen as factor
Two people from rural Montgomery County are dead after a head-on collision between a pickup truck and the utility terrain vehicle the victims were traveling in, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff ’s Office.
The law enforcement agency identified the victims as Randall Anderson, 35, and 29-year-old Kristi Schlobohm, who was a passenger in the Cub Cadet UTV. A UTV is like an all-terrain vehicle, but has a hard covered top and full windshield, as well as four-wheel drive and capacity to lug heavy cargo.
Schlobohm and Anderson are from Sprakers, a hamlet in the town of Root in Montgomery County. They were pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner.
A preliminary investigation indicates that alcohol was a factor in the deadly wreck that occurred when Anderson, who was behind the wheel of the UTV, failed to yield to the Ford F-350 truck.
The driver of the truck was not injured, is cooperating with authorities and is not suspected of any wrongdoing in the crash that occurred Friday afternoon at the intersection of Clinton and Buell roads in Canajoharie, according to the sheriff ’s office.
The crash forced authorities to close down the intersection for several hours.
The sheriff ’s office is awaiting toxicology and reconstruction results, and are being assisted in the ongoing probe by the State Police’s patrol and the BCI and collision reconstruction unit.
The South Minden Volunteer Fire Department, the Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Department, the Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc., the Canajoharie Police Department and motorists in the area all helped out at the crash scene.
