Phipps, Indians advance

Landon Phipps scored three goals and had two assists to lead 15th-seeded Glens Falls past 18th-seeded Johnstown 8-1 on Tuesday in a Section II Class B play-in round boys’ soccer matchup in Glens Falls.

The Indians raced out to a 5-0 lead at the halftime break and coasted to the victory. Jack Mostiff added two goals and two assists for Glens Falls, which advances to take on second-seeded Greenville on Wednesday in a Class B first round contest.

Trey Naselli scored the lone goal for Johnstown.

Boys’ cross country: Host Lake George topped the field at the Lake George Mini-invitation­al meet. The Warriors finished with 26 total points, ahead of Hoosic Valley (44), Corinth (75) and Hartford (84). Hoosic Valley’s Ethan Sheldon won the race with a time of 15 minutes, 57.3 seconds. Isaac Herrick of Lake George was second (16:09.8) and Hoosic Valley’s Jake Kinnicut (16:16.3) rounded out the top three.

Girls’ cross country: Greenwich spoiled the host Lake George girls’ team’s shot at the top spot in the Lake George Mini-invitation­al. The Witches placed first with 32 total points while the Warriors were second with 52 points. Hoosic Valley was third with 58 total points. Nina Sgambellur­i took first in the race with a time of 17:22.1. Hoosic Valley teammates Lily Czub (17:42.3) and Sophia Squires (17:49.2) were second and third, respective­ly.

Girls’ volleyball: Burnt Hills kept its perfect Suburban Council record intact with a 3-0 sweep of rival Averill Park. The Spartans, who are 11-0 in league play and 21-3 overall, won by scores of 25-11, 25-7 and 25-3. Callie Chevalier had nine kills, three aces and five digs to lead Burnt Hills . ... Columbia climbed to 12-1 overall and 10-1 in the Suburban with a 3-0 sweep of Shaker. Arrica Silliman had 14 assists, three kills and five digs for the Blue Devils, who won by scores of 25-18, 25-8 and 25-14. Peyton Strand had five kills and eight digs to lead Shaker (4-8).
