High school football: Five things to watch

- JAMES ALLEN

Another week, and even more intrigue in the Class A Capital Division awaits. La Salle’s miraculous 27-26 overtime win last week over Amsterdam sends those two teams and Averill Park into this week all with a chance to procure one of two playoff berths. Columbia plays at Averill Park, La Salle travels to take on Troy and Amsterother dam meets Albany.

Glens Falls (6-1) plays host to Ravena (7-1) this week in a Class B crossover contest. Next week in the Class B semifinals, the two teams (Glens Falls is ranked No. 8 and Ravena is rated No. 24) are set to meet again at the same location seeking a berth in the Super Bowl. Schuylerville opened up the Class C quarterfinals Thursday with a victory over Taconic Hills. The

three contests feature two games Friday — Hudson (5-3) at Hoosick Falls/tamarac (6-1) and Fonda (5-3) at Watervliet (7-1). Saturday, Cobleskill (5-3) takes on Voorheesville (6-1). Shaker is the No. 1 seed for the Class AA sectionals, regardless of its result against Saratoga Springs. The other three playoff teams have been determined. Christian Brothers Academy, Guilderland and Shenendehowa decide the order Friday. If Guilderland wins against Schenectady and Shenendehowa beats CBA, Guilderland would play at Shaker and Shen would play host to CBA. If Guilderland and CBA prevail, there would be a three-way tie and quarter points come into play. Niskayuna (5-3 overall, 2-1 division) travels Saturday to take on Queensbury (2-5, 2-1) to determine the No. 2 seed from the Class A Grasso Division.
