Viscusi hat trick gives Sabres title
Schalmont rallied for four second-half goals to defeat Mechanicville 4-1 on Friday in the Section II Class B girls’ soccer championship game in Stillwater.
Gianna Viscusi had three goals, including the game-winner with just more than seven minutes to play, to lead Schalmont to the state tournament.
The Red Raiders held a 1-0 advantage at the halftime break before Simone Cassano tied the game at 1 for the Sabres early in the second half. Then the Viscusi show began with her go-ahead goal and another two goals after that to complete the hat trick and seal the come-from-behind win.
The Sabres advance to the Class B portion of the state tournament with an opponent, time and date still to be determined.
Girls’ volleyball: Julia Reedy had a memorable night in leading No. 1 Galway to a 25-4, 25-7, 25-14 win over No. 8 Maple Hill in the Class D quarterfinals. Reedy finished with 16 kills and 10 digs to surpass 1,000 digs and 1,400 kills as a varsity player. Trishelle Oliver added 10 kills and four blocks and Sadie Underwood chipped in with eight kills and three blocks for Galway . ... Madison King had four aces, five kills, one block and three digs to spark Mayfield to a 25-20, 27-25, 25-21 win over Johnstown in the Class C quarterfinals. Teianna Frasier had one kill, 16 digs, 11 assists and one ace for the Lady Bills.
Girls’ cross country: Coxsackieathens took the top spot at the Greene County Championship meet. Coxsackieathens finished with 18 points, Greenville was second with 43 and Cairo-durham placed third with 82 points. Claire Hubert was first with a finish time of 22 minutes, 27 seconds to lead the Mustangs . ... Voorheesville won the Colonial Council Championship with 28 points. Mohonasen (52) and Albany Academy (108) rounded out the top three. Mariem Sayahi of Voorheesville had the top individual time of 18:13.3 on the 3.04mile Saratoga Spa Stake Park course.
Boys’ cross country: Coxsackieathens also grabbed first on the boys’ side of the Greene County Championship meet. The Mustangs had 28 points to just get past second-place Greenville, which had 30. Finn Kosich of Greenville won the race with a time of 18:10 . ... La Salle’s Gitch Hayes claimed his second straight win at the Colonial Council Championships at Saratoga Spa State Park. Hayes topped the field for a second consecutive year with a time of 15:14.7. Albany Academy won the meet with 48 points while Hayes and his La Salle team placed second with 75 points.
