All-american Cockburn suspended by NCAA
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The NCAA suspended Illinois center and preseason All-american Kofi Cockburn for the first three games of the season because he sold apparel and memorabilia before new regulations that allow athletes to participate in money-making ventures went into effect.

College football: Gary Patterson, the second-longesttenured head coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision, has parted ways with TCU after 21 seasons. Jerry Kill, a former head coach at Minnesota who joined TCU'S staff in 2020, will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season. Patterson is the winningest coach in TCU history at 181-79 . ... USC receiver Drake London will miss the rest of the season with a broken right ankle . ... Alabama State fired coach Donald Hill-eley two days after the Hornets’ latest loss to rival Alabama A&M. Defensive coordinator Travis Pearson will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season. Hill-eley went 20-21 in four-plus seasons, including 0-4 against Alabama A&M.
Tennis: Andy Murray blew seven match points and lost his Paris Masters opener to Dominik Koepfer 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (9). Cameron Norrie stayed in contention for one of the two remaining ATP Finals spots by cruising past Federico Delbonis 6-2, 6-1 . ... Canada won the decisive doubles match to secure a 2-1 upset victory over defending champion France in Group A of the Billie Jean King Cup finals.
Horse racing: Jockey Miguel Mena, who won nearly 2,100 thoroughbred races in North America and earned $72.4 million in prize money, died following a pedestrian accident. He was 34. Mena was killed Sunday night on westbound Interstate 64 near Jeffersontown, Ky. Soccer: Manager Nuno Espirito Santo was fired by Tottenham after only four months on the job . ... Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero will be sidelined for at least three months after undergoing heart tests.
