Ostrander is ahead in Milton contest

-

One resident made the choice based on baseball, which Stammel plays.

“Mike plays baseball. Anybody who understands baseball understands the rules of life: fairness, common sense, you get three strikes not one, if you hit a foul ball you get another chance, you got a piece of it,” said resident Jim Flaherty. “Common sense. That’s what matters.”

Stammel and the all-democrat seven-member Common Council have battled ceaselessly since he was elected in 2019 to fill the remaining two years of Democratic mayor Daniel Dwyer, who died in office in 2018.

One voter said he hoped the election would calm the strife.

“Ending the bitterness ... have us be respectful to one another,” s aid voter Byron Fonda.

One voter said she chose Mooney because of his experience.

“He was mayor before and he did a good job,” said Judy Brophy.

“I remain confident —once each and every ballot is legally counted —that we will be victorious,” Mooney said.
