MOVIE QUIZ

- — C.J. Lais Jr.

This week, Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical love letter to his childhood and his Northern Island hometown, “Belfast,” finally opens, many months after it was touted as the frontrunner for next year’s best picture Oscar win.

We were inspired by the writer-director’s civic artistry. This week’s hyperlocal quiz is all about other movies with one-word (or two-word) cityonly titles. That’s right, not even “New York, New York” or “Paris, Texas” make the cut.

1. Which one of these movies starred future leader of the free world Ronald Reagan? A. “Shanghai” B. “Havana” C. “Hong Kong ” D. “Istanbul”

2. Speaking of the 40th president, there’s long been an apocryphal story that he was the original choice to star in the 1942 drama that ended up being one of the most loved movies of all time. What was it?

3. True or false: No scene in 1996’s “Fargo” actually takes place in that North Dakota city.

4. 2017 was supposed to be the year of the “D” movies, two fact-based films from prestigious directors that were supposed to rule the box office and awards ceremonies, and just happened to be named after cities that started with that letter. While both were critically acclaimed, one became the highest-grossing World War II movie ever made and was nominated for eight Oscars, the other was a big financial disappointment and

went unnominated. What were the two films?

5. “Chicago” won the Academy Award for best picture in 2003 and is still the only movie named after an American city to achieve that feat. Many others have been nominated, though. Which one of the following was NOT? A. “Philadelphia” B. “Atlantic City” C. “Selma” D.. “San Francisco”

6. What actor starred in both “Troy” and “Elizabethtown,” and whose own first name is the same as a city in Florida?

7. This 2017 film starred John Cho, is named after the Indiana city known as “Athens on the Prairie” and showcases the modern architecture that earned it that nickname. What is it?

8. Match the director with their city-titled movie. A. Robert Altman B. Jim Jarmusch C. Steven Spielberg D. Whit Stillman

I. “Barcelona” II. “Kansas City” III. “Munich” IV. “Paterson”

9. Everyone remembers the famous quote delivered by Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday in 1993’s “Tombstone”: “I’m your huckleberry.” But Kilmer – in a criminally un- Oscar-nominated performance, by the way – tosses off many other unforgettable lines, too. Fill in the blank on this one: “It appears my ----- knows no bounds.”

10. Ed Helms plays an insurance agent who travels to the second-biggest city in Iowa, which is also the title of this 2011 comedy. What is it?

?? Sony Pictures Classics ?? So close. But 2008's "Synecdoche, New York" starring Samantha Morton and Philip Seymour Hoffman doesn't make the cut of our city-only movie title quiz inspired by the release of "Belfast." First, because it includes the state. And second, because it's not a real place ... like Schenectady.
