Lady Vols win at wire

No. 16 Tennessee beats No. 23 South Florida

Jordan Horston scored 18 of her 24 points in the second half, Tamari Key had 10 points, 10 rebounds and six blocks, and No. 16 Tennessee beat No. 23 South Florida 52-49 on Monday night.

Elena Tsineke scored 13 points for South Florida (2-1), and Elisa Pinzan added 11 points.

Tennessee (3-0) took its first lead since early in the game on a putback by Key with 1:38 left in the game to make it a 47-46 lead. But Pinzan sank an open 3pointer to retake the lead for USF with 44.6 left.

Horston then went to the line on three straight possession­s. She converted a three-point play with 39.4 seconds left and twice went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line, leaving USF a chance to tie.

But Tennessee’s defense locked down and didn’t allow the Bulls to get off a quality shot in the final 9.3 seconds.

No. 5 N.C. State 100, Towson 52:

Diamond Johnson scored 16 points and had six rebounds for N.C. State, which led wire-to-wire in a commanding victory over Towson. Johnson also had three assists and two steals. Aleah Nelson paced the Tigers (3-1) with 17 points.

No. 6 Baylor 78, New Orleans 39:

Queen Egbo scored 22 points on 11of-12 shooting and had 11 rebounds as Baylor improved to 3-0 under new coach Nicki Collen with a win over New Orleans. Nalyssa Smith had her second straight double-double, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Brianna Ellis had 16 points for the Privateers (0-2).

No. 14 Iowa State 75, South Dakota State 56:

Lexi Donarski scored 22 points and Aubrey Joens added 17 in Iowa State’s win over South Dakota State. Emily Ryan had 12 points, five assists and four steals for Iowa State (2-0). Madysen Vlastuin led South Dakota State (1-2) with 14 points.

Men Marquette 67, No. 10 Illinois 66:

Tyler Kolek converted a steal into a go-ahead layup with 18 seconds left and Marquette forced 26 turnovers for a 67-66 comeback victory over No. 10 Illinois. Marquette (3-0) came back from a 12-point deficit in the second half to give new coach Shaka Smart his first signature win, despite going 3-of-9 from the foul line down the stretch.

No. 9 Baylor 89, Nicholls State 60:

LJ Cryer had a career-high 20 points to lead five players scoring in double figures for Baylor, which overwhelme­d Nicholls State. Ty Gordon had 20 points for the defending Southland Conference champion Colonels (3-1).

No. 19 Ohio State 89, Bowling Green 58:

Five players scored in double figures for Ohio State in its victory over Bowling Green. E.J. Liddell and Meechie Johnson each scored 13 points. Chandler Turner led the Falcons (1-2) with 12 points, and Samari Curtis and Joe Reese each had 11 points.
