Build Back Better will help area seniors
As Thanksgiving approaches, I’m thankful for President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better agenda. New York state will receive a massive infusion of funds for transportation infrastructure, clean water and internet access.
The pandemic showed that reliable broadband service is essential for wellness through telemedicine, online benefit applications, reducing social isolation and essential online purchases. Too many households in our region, including older residents, lack access.
The act is moving through Congress, and the final version is expected to include three important gains: $89 billion invested in a new Medicare benefit for hearing care to begin in 2023, including coverage of prescribed hearing aids under Medicare Part B; lower prescription drug costs by capping total out-of-pocket expenses to $2,000 and capping insulin costs to no more than $35 per month; and an effort to address the backlog of people needing home care services.
That last is urgently needed as area residents are languishing on waiting lists. Tragically, due to lack of available care, our neighbors are unable to remain in their own homes and/or cannot attain a safe discharge from a hospital or nursing facility.
These investments are lifesaving, allowing residents to age with the dignity they so deserve. This Thanksgiving, we should all be grateful, too, as Rep. Paul Tonko helps to secure these historic investments that will help make the Capital Region a place where we can all thrive.
