Buie leads Northweste­rn

Former Troy standout scores 22 as Wildcats turn back Bulldogs

Former Troy High player Boo Buie had 22 points and six assists, Ryan Young added 17 points and Northweste­rn beat Georgia 78-62 on Tuesday night for third place at the Roman Legends Classic.

Northweste­rn led by as many as 24 points in the second half. Georgia got it within 11 points twice in the final five minutes but the Wildcats kept their double-digit advantage throughout the second half.

Pete Nance had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Ty Berry scored 10 points for Northweste­rn (5-1). Buie, coming off a career-high 23 points in a loss to Providence, was 8 of 21 from the field.

Ryan Greer highlighte­d the first half with a steal and heave at midcourt that banked in to give Northweste­rn a 43-23 lead. The Wildcats made eight 3pointers in the first half, while Georgia was 1 of 12.

Braelen Bridges and Kario Oquendo each scored 12 points for Georgia (2-4). Jailyn Ingram and Aaron Cook added 10 points apiece.

Georgia topped its first-half scoring total in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. The Bulldogs made 11 of 18 shots to start the second half after going 6 for 26 in the entire first half.

Vermont 58, Evansville 49: Colonie High graduate Isaiah Powell had 17 points and seven rebounds as Vermont topped Evansville in the Gulf Coast Showcase. Ben Shungu had 12 points for Vermont (4-2). Jawaun Newton had 16 points for the Purple Aces (2-5).

Wisconsin 65, Houston 63: No. 12 Houston scored the first 17 points against Butler at the Maui Invitation­al on Monday, and then allowed Wisconsin to score the first 13 points en route to a 20-point halftime deficit in Tuesday’s semifinal. It cost the Cougars in the long run, as Johnny Davis scored a career-high 30 points to lead Wisconsin past Houston. The Cougars cut Wisconsin’s lead to two on Kyler Edwards’ 3-pointer with 40 seconds left, but a Jamal Shead pass to Edwards, who wasn’t expecting the feed, led to a turnover that cost the Cougars a chance at a final attempt.

Illinois 72, Kansas State 64: Kofi Cockburn had 23 points and 13 rebounds, Alfonso Plummer hit seven 3-pointers and added 21 points, and No. 14 Illinois held off pesky Kansas State in the consolatio­n game of the Hall of Fame Classic. Plummer finished 7 of 9 from beyond the arc, and the Illini (3-2) went 12 of 26 from 3 as they bounced back from a 71-51 blowout loss in the semifinals.

Ohio State 110, Bellarmine 58: Jacy Sheldon scored 25 of her careerhigh 31 points in the first half to help No. 21 Ohio State beat Bellarmine.
