Glens Falls grad hits 2 FTS late in double OT to deal Indiana 1st loss

Joseph Girard III made two free throws with 0.8 seconds left in double overtime and Syracuse beat previously unbeaten Indiana 112-110 on Tuesday night in the Big TEN/ACC Challenge.

Syracuse (4-3) won a doubleover­time game at home for the first time since Feb. 25, 1971.

In the second overtime, Indiana forward Miller Kopp was fouled on a deep 3-point attempt with 7.6 seconds to go, and made all three free throws to tie it at 110. Glens Falls graduate Girard took the inbounds pass and got it to Jimmy Boeheim for a giveand-go before driving the lane to force a foul, leading to the goahead free throws.

Indiana (6-1), which had 25 turnovers and overcame an 18-point second-half deficit, didn’t get off a shot at the final buzzer.

Buddy Boeheim scored 27 points and Jimmy Boeheim added a career-high 26 to lead Syracuse. Girard finished with 22 points. They combined for 12 of the Orange’s 13 3-pointers.

Syracuse essentiall­y had the game won in regulation when they fouled Khristian Lander with a three-point lead and 2.6 seconds remaining. Lander made the first free throw and intentiona­lly missed the second, but Benny Williams fouled Trayce Jackson-davis on the putback. Jackson-davis made both free throws to force the first overtime tied at 88.

Jackson-davis, who scored a career-high 43 points against Marshall, led the Hoosiers with 31 points and 16 rebounds. Kopp

added a career-best 28 points. Race Thompson had 17 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Parker Stewart chipped in 20 points before fouling out.

Jesse Edwards added 17 and Cole Swider 14 for Syracuse, which has won six of its last seven against the Hoosiers.

No. 2 Purdue 93, Florida State 65: Jaden Ivey scored 18 points and matched his career high with four 3-pointers, Brandon Newman added 13 points, and No. 2 Purdue pulled away from Florida State in the Big TEN/ACC Challenge. The Boilermake­rs have won seven straight home games in the annual clash between the conference­s.

No. 13 Tennessee 86, Presbyteri­an 44: Kennedy Chandler and Justin Powell scored 15 points apiece to lead No. 13 Tennessee to victory over Presbyteri­an. Chandler, a freshman guard, had seven assists and seven steals. Powell, a transfer from Auburn, came off the bench to hit all five of his 3-point attempts.

No. 15 Houston 99, Northweste­rn State 58:

Marcus Sasser made seven 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 26 points, and No. 15 Houston beat Northweste­rn State. Sasser had 23 points by halftime on 7-for-12 shooting from beyond the arc as the Cougars (6-1) built a 60-25 lead at the break. He finished 9-for-17 from the field for the game.

No. 17 Uconn 72, Maryland-eastern Shore 63: R.J. Cole scored 25 points and No. 17 Uconn survived a challenge from Maryland-eastern Shore to win. Tyler Polley added 14 points for the Huskies (7-1), who jumped five spots in the AP Top 25 after a third-place showing over the holiday weekend in the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Women

No. 5 Baylor 73, Morehead State 28: Sarah Andrews scored 20 points, Queen Egbo and Nalyssa Smith each had a double-double and No. 5 Baylor beat Morehead State. The Bears (7-1) held the Eagles to 20 percent shooting (11-of-55) in their 64th consecutiv­e nonconfere­nce home victory.
