Greenwich upsets Chatham for Class C title
Niesz’s hit, Mccauliffe’s strikeout seal victory in extra innings
Norah Niesz drove in the winning run in the 11th inning and Lily Mccauliffe sealed a championship with a gameending strikeout as third-seeded
Greenwich upset No. 1 Chatham 4-3 in the Class C final Thursday in Moreau.
The Witches’ Allie Mcqueen belted a two-run home run over the left-field wall to tie the game in the seventh.
Chatham (23-1) threatened in the bottom of the seventh, but the Witches (19-4) turned a double play and Mccauliffe ended the threat with a strikeout.
Hannah Pinto had a sacrifice fly for Chatham.
Girls’ lacrosse: Led by the Lescault sisters, No. 1 Burnt Hills-ballston Lake cruised to a 17-7 win over No. 2 Albany Academy in the Class A title game. MK Lescault scored four goals and added three assists and sister Maggie Lescault tied Ella Blesi for the team lead with five goals apiece. Caroline Kogut added three goals and two assists. Maddie Morrison made seven saves for the Spartans. Emily Smith led the Bears with three goals.
Baseball: Eric Zelezniak and Myles Pleasants led No. 1 Galway to a 4-0 win over No. 2 Duanesburg in the Class C championship game. Zelezniak no-hit the Purple Eagles before opposing pitcher Peyton Fall doubled to end the bid. Fall struck out 13, but allowed four runs in the second inning. Pleasants highlighted the rally with a two-run double. Galway scored another run on a double steal.
Track and field: Fonda captured the boys’ team title and Schuylerville won the girls’ championship at Group III sectionals in Fonda. Allen Booth (800), Mathieu Dettenrieder (3,000 steeplechase), Alesandro Saltsman (shot put, discus) and Carter Petersen (pole vault) all had wins for the Fonda boys. Keira Rogan (1,500, 3,000), Nikki Stark (400 hurdles), Adeline Ballou (2,000 steeplechase), Ryan Stark (pole vault) and Meaghan Lynch (long jump) all had individual wins for the Black Horses.
