Ryder, George William

ALBANY — George William Ryder Jr., "Bill," 92, passed away peacefully at home in Albany on February 23, 2022.

He joined his beloved Leni, who predeceased him four months earlier. He was a devoted husband for 69 years.

Bill lived life with a lot of heart. In 1949, he was an All-county basketball player, undefeated, a local legend. From player to coach, he set a standard for the game and as a fan was dedicated to his "Orange community."

He was a resident of Jamesville for most of his life. Bill served his country while stationed in Newfoundland, Canada, with love and integrity.

A graduate of Syracuse University, he taught physical education and later was self-employed. He employed young adults to reinforce discipline and pride in work. Whether it was through the summer parks and recreation program or house painting, the impact Bill had was truly felt many years later.

Music from the ’40s was important to him. He could recite lyrics from long ago with a dance and beautiful singing voice that we will always cherish.

As a people-person, he generously shook hands with an old friend and hugged a loved one without a second thought. He could connect people to situations and places that were so vivid in his memory.

His pleasures were simple. He traveled with Leni to visit family. He enjoyed walking the hills of San Francisco, day trips to Skaneateles and Leni’s home cooked meals. Camaraderie is something one would feel in his company. Watching a ball game, getting ice cream or playing golf - his friendship was always there.

In the end, Bill faced his transition with the same fierce independence and pride that he displayed throughout his life.

Bill enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren as they grew through their activities. He will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his dear brother, Garrett Ryder (Diane Conlon); loving children, Robert Ryder (Jodi Halbig), Karen Gerety (Gregg), Lisa Ryder (Patrick Moore), William Ryder (Stephanie), Alan Ryder (Bridget), Nancy Verrette (Dennis), and Laura Ryder (Chris Kania); 16 grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by precious son, Daniel Ryder; and grandson, Sam Ryder.

The family would like to thank the Community Hospice of Albany.

A memorial service will be held in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Dewitt on July 9, at 10 a.m.
