Salah, Kerr earn top honors in English soccer
LONDON — Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was voted as men’s player of the year by his fellow professionals in England for the second time while Chelsea striker Sam Kerr won the women’s award on Thursday.
More soccer: Brazilian soccer club Flamengo announced on Thursday that it had fired Portuguese coach Paulo Sousa, who took the job in December. Sousa, who was previously in charge of Poland, had a two-year contract with the Rio de Janeiro team . ... Portugal and Spain won in the Nations League on Thursday to set up a battle for a spot in the Final Four. Portugal took sole possession of the lead in Group 2 of the top-tier League A by defeating the Czech Republic 2-0, while Spain earned a first win and moved into second place by edging Switzerland 1-0 in Geneva.
College basketball: Arizona men’s basketball coach Tommy
Lloyd has agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2027 following his first season there. The Arizona Board of Regents on Thursday approved the contract, which gives Lloyd a $1 million raise next season and includes $19 million in total compensation. The contract increases Lloyd’s base salary from $1.9 million to $2.9 million in 2022-23. He also will receive $100,000 escalators each year after that. He’ll continue to get $700,000 per year in additional duties compensation.
Track and field: Allyson Felix finished seventh in the 200 meters of what was likely her final Diamond League meet. Felix, the most decorated female track athlete in Olympic history, plans to retire later this season.
Tennis: Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray defeated seventh-seeded Alexander Bublik 6-3, 7-6 (4) to reach the Stuttgart Open quarterfinals . ... Top-seeded Maria Sakkari beat Rebecca Marino 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 to reach the Nottingham Open quarterfinals.
Obituary: George Thompson, who played for Marquette from 1967-69 and was one of the men’s basketball program’s all-time leading scorers, died Wednesday due to complications from diabetes. He was 74.
