BELMONT PICKS

-

Tony Podlaski: MO DONEGAL

didn’t have the best Kentucky Derby run with the awkward start and 10-wide trip

while making up ground; he did win his first race over this track. CREATIVE MINISTER made an interesting impression in the Preakness with his thirdplace finish off an allowance and maiden win. NEST lost the stretch battle to Secret Oath in the Kentucky Oaks; this wouldn’t be the first time if Todd Pletcher wins the Belmont with a filly. WE THE PEOPLE rebounded off a dismal race in Arkansas Derby with an impressive victory in the Peter Pan; he could be tough to catch as possibly the lone speed.

Bill Douglas, Times Union: When RICH STRIKE shocked the field at the Kentucky Derby, it appeared the more distance the better. With a smaller field, a good trip is likely and the extra rest by skipping the Preakness should help. CREATIVE MINISTER had a strong Preakness, and doesn’t have to contend with Early Voting and Epicenter this time. MO DONEGAL Wood winner had traffic trouble in the Derby, but should have clear sailing here.

NEST was a close second in the Kentucky Oaks and should have a strong effort here.

David Johnson, Times Union: Drawing the rail was the death knell to MO DONEGAL’S chances at the Derby but he was still moving at the end and might enjoy the distance. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. chose the son of Uncle Mo over the filly Nest. I don’t think RICH STRIKE will have everything go his way this time. WE THE PEOPLE has the tactical advantage as the lone early speed. He beat GOLDEN GLIDER in the Peter Pan.
