Red Sox rout Athletics 6-1

-

Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer, Nick Pivetta pitched eight strong innings and the Boston Red Sox beat the slumping Oakland Athletics 6-1 on Tuesday night.

JD Martinez also homered for Boston, which was back at home after going 8-2 on a West Coast road trip that started with a three-game sweep at Oakland.

The A’s, who had lost 11 of 12 entering Tuesday, didn’t fare any better in Boston. Oakland had just two hits off Pivetta until Stephen Vogt’s solo homer in the eighth broke up the shutout bid. The only other hits for the A’s against the starter were Tony Kemp’s leadoff single in the fourth and Sean Murphy’s single in the fifth.

After opening the season 0-4, Pivetta (6-5) reeled off victories in five straight starts before his hot streak ended in a loss last Thursday at the Los Angeles Angels. He was back in form on Tuesday, getting an early lead and cruising through seven scoreless innings.

Cardinals 3-9, Pirates 1-1: Miles Mikolas was one strike from a no-hitter when he gave up a double to Cal Mitchell with two outs in the ninth inning, and St. Louis routed Pittsburgh 9-1 to sweep a doubleheader. The hit came on the 129th pitch from Mikolas (5-4), a career high. Paul Goldschmidt homered and drove in three runs as St. Louis won the opener of the day-night doubleheader 3-1. Yadier Molina passed Ivan Rodriguez for the most putouts in MLB history during the doubleheader opener.

Braves 10, Nationals 4: Michael Harris II and Travis d’arnaud each had three hits and homered for the second straight game, and Atlanta connected five times in their 13th straight win.

Orioles 6, Blue Jays 5: Ryan Mountcastle hit a two-run home run, Austin Hays had a solo shot and Baltimore held on to beat Toronto.

Astros 4, Rangers 3: Kyle Tucker extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games with a go-ahead homer in the eighth inning, and AL West-leading Houston rallied for a victory over Texas.

White Sox 5, Tigers 1: Dylan Cease allowed one run in five innings to remain unbeaten in 10 decisions against Detroit.

Marlins 11, Phillies 9: Jesus Aguilar homered, drove in four runs and hit a go-ahead double in the ninth inning to lead Miami to a wild victory over Philadelphia.

Padres 12, Cubs 5: Luke Voit hit a two-run homer and a three-run double as San Diego rallied from a five-run deficit to hand Chicago its eighth straight loss.

Notes: Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg was placed on the 15-day injured list with a stress reaction of the ribs . ... Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu will miss the rest of the season because of ligament damage in his elbow.
